Yazd Visual Identity

about

In my graphic design synthesis course, I was tasked with creating a visual identity system for a UNESCO World Heritage site - I chose the Historic City of Yazd in Iran as I found the architecture to be unique and beautiful. I designed a full brand identity for Yazd, including a logo, color palette, type system, and a fifth element. Additionally, I applied this identity to a letterhead, envelope, information sheet, 3 single-page New Yorker ads, site signs in 7 languages, a bike share system, and an informational booklet.

goal

The Historic City of Yazd does not currently have any clear visual identity. The goal of this project was to create a cohesive brand for the city that represents its rich history and traditional architecture. Yazd's economy relies heavily on tourism, and having a distinct brand would ideally encourage more tourism in the city, helping it's residents maintain the historic land.

process

I began this project by creating a list of words that I associate with Yazd to serve as inspiration for my identity. I then used this list to begin sketching out logos; I was heavily inspired by the traditional Persian architecture of Yazd, specfically wind catchers and onion domes. I landed on a mark inspired by a shape found carved out of some of the homes in Yazd, and a word mark that derives from the frequent use of arches in their architecture.
